My favorite knitting pattern this Fall is Houndstooth.  

   With the addition of various color combinations, such as this red tweed with small blue flecks and the cream color, the effects are quite nice.  Notice that the faux cable brim (a twist stitch) can be left down in order to show off the patterning, or can be turned up to reflect a standard stocking cap look.
